"An
overhanging canopy topped by soaring rocket-like spire gives this
building great presence and expresses an optimism about technology
and progress. But the short lifespan of the small independant
service station operators, selling many brands of petrol, soon
came to an end after the second world war with the introduction
of bigger stations, tied to one company, who offered uniformed
attendants, clean rest rooms and many bonus offers to take the
major share of business."
