The Alfred
St Archway Entrance leading to Luna Park is a good example of
amusement park design of the 1930's and is unique in the surrounding
streetscape. The gate was built in 1935 for the opening of Luna
Park. Oringinally the sign was constructed from moulded panels
with decorative light fixtures with scalloped brackets and inverted
cone and cusp motifs. the top of the gateway was crowned with
four flag masts on a set of cylindrical cones. The sign had colour
neon on both sides as well as festooned lights and concealed Art
Deco lighting. Original photographs show reclining women in the
classical style on top which were later removed.
The sign was demolished in early 2006 due to safety concerns.
The original pylons remain and a restored sign is promised by
North Sydney Council by 2009. (see council plans right) |
